Types of Stress: Main Types of Stress, Their Definition, Characteristics And Symptoms

There are different types of stress in our lives which can be grouped in three main categories. We will discuss all three in detail in terms of their definition, characteristics, symptoms and treatment methodologies available.

Acute Stress

Any stress is in real terms is known as a reaction to a specific situation. As described in Wikipedia “Acute stress reaction (also called acute stress disorder, psychological shock, mental shock, or simply, shock) is a psychological condition arising in response to a terrifying or traumatic event.”

As per above definition, an acute stress is a result of a traumatic event in one’s life in which the person have experienced a situation of extreme fear and disturbing. An acute stress has been seen mostly in situations that involves serious injury or death to themselves or someone very near to a person.

Common symptoms of acute stress are numbing, detachment, derealization, depersonalization, dissociative amnesia and continued re-experiences may occur as dreams and thought flashbacks. These symptoms may last for 4 weeks from the time of that event.

The good part of acute stress is that you don’t need to do anything to detect a acute stress situation as it is easily visible.

There is a type of acute stress which is known as “Episodic Acute Stress” where a person is suffering through acute stress on a regular basis.

Eustress

Eustress is also known as “Good Stress” or ‘Positive Stress”. This type of stress is healthy for us, which gives a feeling of fulfillment and other positive feelings.

Some common examples where one can experience ‘Eustress” are promotion in your job, watching a scary movie, love, marriage, childbirth, weight loss training, riding a roller coaster etc.

Chronic Stress

By definition in Wikipedia “Chronic stress is the response of the brain to unpleasant events for a prolonged period over which an individual perceives he or she has no control”.

As per Chronic Stress definition, you can see that this type of stress have the capacity to cause long term damage to your physical and mental health.

Some common symptoms of ‘Chronic Stress” is upset stomach, headache, backache, insomnia, anxiety, depression, aggression, frequent mood swings, poor concentration, hypertension.

Chronic stress is largely responsible for panic attacks, worse depression and cardiovascular deseases. There are several methods to treat chronic stress conditions which includes exercise, healthy diet, relaxation techniques, adequate rest. Magnesium supplements have been suggested in my cases as well to treat chronic stress levels.
